first off...let me apologise for the questions below, I know the answers are all probably out there but I really do find it confusing!

I bought my grandson a wii for xmas and would now like to install Wiigator, but I am confused about the following points...(pls be patient with me and help if you can)

1) it has firmware 3.4e...will it work with this?
2) do I need to install homebrew ?
3) can I disable the autoupdate feature on the Wii?
4) I've read many guides but they all seem to differ slightly, can you point me to a 'definitive' working guide pls ?

Pls, no derogatory comments, I'm embarrassed enough, believe me.
on a positive note, this may also help others like me who are too embarrassed to ask, but need your expertise...relying on your kindness and patience...thankyou
