Let's say I download an .avi file. Is there any way I can tell when it was encoded (is this the correct term?) using the AC3 audio codec?

The reason I ask is that I usually burn .avi files onto DVDs to play on my friends Xbox 360, but .avi files that use AC3 don't work, so I would like to know if there is a way to tell if the audio track uses AC3 or not.

And if it does, would I be able to use Nero Recode to convert it into just a 'regular' .avi file?

You can use the program VirtualDubMod, available for download here at aD. Just open the program and drag you video file into the blank window. Go to "Streams" in the top menu bar. Click and then click on "Report." This will tell you the video and audio streams encoded. I know there are probably easier programs for this but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

I'll try that out; I believe I have it installed. I remember reading that name when installing AutoGK.

Edit: It works, thanks a lot.

No problem, glad I could help. I should have thought to mention the fact that it is installed with AGK if you have that program, but it was late and the brain was getting weary. Glad you you got it to work :)
