disc drive doesn't recognize dvd+r dl correctly

I've been using ImgBurn with many brands of dvd+r and dvd-r for a while without any problems. I just recently got a pack of memorex dvd+r dl discs and on the bottom left, I get the "disc not empty" message and in the right pane the disc is being recognized as a dvd+rw. I also tried nero and that said it was a dvd+rw also. I updated my dvd drive firmware to the latest version I could find but it didn't make a difference. I tried every disc in the package without any luck. Today I got a pack of verbaitum dvd+r dl singapore discs and I'm getting the same message.
I have an lg drive model HL-DT-ST ram.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD-RAM GSA-H54N that I got a few months ago but this is the first time I tried to burn to a dl disc. It says that it's supposed to burn on dl discs.
Any ideas?
