I am currently on Bearshare at the moment and i have a good few things on the down load and a good few things on the upload. I have heard that overnet ias good for large files so i am going to get on it and start downloading some stuff, however i do not want to cancel/turn off bearshare, can i just install overnet and then they will both work at once??(at a slower speed obviously).

You can run as many as you want, but as you stated, your speed will be slowed on all as a consequence, as your upload speed will be split and most clients reward generous uploaders. Doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, but don't stretch yourself too thin.
