i realy need to convert some wav and mpa files to AC3- could someone please tell me of a good freeware program that can do that?

I would use BeSweet coupled with the BeSweet gui. The newer gui has a wizard that allows you to do such conversions pretty painlessly.

Whoa!!! Stop the music. Besweet's AC-3 will cause you all kinds of compatibility problems, most notably Pioneer, the most ubitquitous machine out there. Their AC-3 solution has never worked right.

YOu can try this but I have no current opinion at the moment as to freeware. There really isn't a good solution for free.
