What's the point of spoofing one drive for another? Is it only necessary when replacing one model drive with a different model, or am I missing something? I thought as long as you have the key, you just need to insert it into the FW of the replacement drive.

Correct if you get the same drive all you do is inject the key in that firmware for that drive .

So is the point of spoofing when using a different model just so that MS won't ban you, or will the xbox not even work unless it thinks its the same drive as the original?
