I know there are about a million threads discussing which modchip is the best, and I'm sure they help quite a few people, but what I would really like to know is:
What is the best version to use as a platform for modding?
This would be really useful for all of us out there that would like to buy a new(er) ps2 to mod.

From what I understand, a number of people hate the fat ps2's and some despise the slims, but what are the real pros and cons of each?

So far I've noticed that certain fat body ps2's almost always have a serious problem with their "LA chips" which almost always fail. Similarly, certain slim models have lasers that almost always crap out.

From what I can tell, the only REAL strength the fat has over the slim is that you can add an internal hard drive. (with a network adaptor.)

Version 7 is fairly easy in comparison to the slim boards. If you end up trying to solder to the ic legs then the version 7 is easier. The ics on the slim model are smaller and are a pain in the neck to solder around.
