actually you're not of luck.if your system is banned but you still have an active xbox live account then all you have to do is put your hard drive onto a 360 that isn't banned, sign in on your account and you can obtain media updates for your system and downloadable content for your games. just make sure you put in the game you are downloading the content for so it can update ( i think you have to sign out of dashboard and actually start playing the game), otherwise the content wont show up. I had the same problem. i updated to the new dashboard and was no longer able to play avi. files so i borrowed my cousins 360 swapped my HDD onto it got the media update and a bunch of stuff for games. when i plugged my HDD back into my 360 it updated the system and im able to watch avi. files streamed from my computer using TVersity. thought i was screwed but now anytime i want an update or DLC i just take my HDD to a friends house that has a system that isnt banned.

put it on usb mem stick or burn on CD. if you put it on mem stick put it in the root of the mem stick. Plug it into the 360 and a window should pop up on the 360 saying there is an update

Extract the rar file and open the extracted directory, and the next 1 until you get to the folder "$SystemUpdate". Put this folder on the root of your mem stick and plug it into the 360

This is pretty useless when you already did the NXE update, because that added DivX compatibility to the 360. You still have to go on live and download the codecs. So far there is no other way than doing this.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

very true, only way the 'update' will work is if the console is pre-nxe. but then it would be easier to open up the HD and manually place the divx update in the correct section of the HD.
Come talk with us on efnet at #elitemods !!! or just click ME
ALSO, DO NOT SEND ME MESSAGES ON LIVE REGARDING MODDING CONSOLES, OR HOW I PLAYED A CERTAIN GAME EARLY. I WILL NOT RESPOND. I WILL INSTEAD DELETE YOUR MESSAGE, AND BLOCK ALL COMMUNICATION FROM YOU. JUST SEND ME A PM ON HERE.

its really, really, really easy to put your hard drive on a non-banned system and get the update that way. takes about 5 min. just need an active account. thats it.

Just need the possibility to go online with your Xbox 360, that is. As far as I have understood the OP this isn't about his console being banned, he just can't go online.
Also there might be the possibility that if the console is banned he doesn't know anybody else with an Xbox 360.

except the update would be tied to the other 360 due to DRM being rubbish, unless they've removed DRM from the optional media updates. which last i knew, they did not.

last i know is that this process worked for me because i have actually done it and not just speculated on stuff i dont about.im not that computer literate, i dont know what drm is, all i know is that i wondered if putting my hard drive on a non banned 360 and getting the update through my still active live account then putting the hard drive back on my 360 would fix the problem, and it did. maybe it wont work for everyone, i dont know that. but its worth a try since it is so simple

Hey everyone!
Well, heres the rundown. Over the summer I was at a friends house, and he bought an XBOX from a friend. The friend had already downloaded the media update with status code 51-COODF236. He never plugged the XBOX into the internet after pruchasing it, and he was able to play tv shows off his jumpdrive no problem, without being on the internet.
Later in the summer, I updated my brothers XBOX to get this media update so he can watch downloaded tv shows as well. He also doesnt need to be connected to the internet for his to work.
Now, Im back at my place and trying to download the media update for me. I can download it from XBOX live no problem. And the files play like normal. BUT as soon as I disconnect from the internet/log off XBOX live, the media files won't play, and I get the same old status code error for 51-COODF236.
I checked, and I have successfully downloaded it to my harddrive, so i really dont see why I have to be logged into the internet to play the files. I have tried downloading it a couple times, to no avail.
Some things that might be pertinent... I JUST got the hard-drive from some guy in Hong Kong. Its 120 GB, and he has had 300 positive remarks on the harddrives before I bought mine. The reason I bought the HDD was because I only have a arcade edition XBOX, the other two I have set up with the media update have been elites.
Well, thats as helpful as I can be, so please help guys! :)

Also, I forgot to mention-
If I log onto XBOX Live after turning the system on, and play the file, it doesnt require me to re-download the media update. It just plays fine. And then, if I unplug my internet, the files continue to play fine. But, if I turn my system off, keep my internet unplugged, and then turn the system back on....the media files wont play, and it says I need to download the same update I can plainly see is on already on my HDD.

Nothing? Worst case is that I need to keep my xbox plugged into the internet, but that sucks if the internet is down...

Delete and redownload the update. If that still doesn't work you might have to format the harddrive.

Deleting and re-downloading isn't working.
I'll try re-formatting the HDD though, that seems like it will help especially since I bought it from someone in Hong Kong. It was brand new though...anyway, ill try that, but I wasn't able to find a thread explaining how to reformat the HDD, could you please link to one or explain how? Ill keep looking to, thanks!

I had the same problem and this worked for me. I can now play divx and xvid without having to sign into live
Quote: Using my main Xbox Live account (which wasn't created on my current Xbox), I have to sign in to Live to able to play AVI/MP4 files.
I erased the media update from my 360's hard drive, created a new silver account, and signed in to it. I then played an AVI from an external USB drive, which of course means that I have to download the update again. Now I dont have to sign in to be able to play AVI/MP4 files.
