Hey there guys, first of all, thanks in advace to anyone who cares to share a tip to help me out here...
Now, i have a Wii. First type, the very first model, so, easy to mod. I Payed for the Wiikey (back when it was the only one reliable) and got screwed. I got a Wiiclone. I know it because i cant update the damn thing...
My wii is 3.1u it's a NTSC console, that never went online (neve plan to either). For reference... i can Play Okami, but i cant play Mario Galaxy (both Backups), the console locks up if i try.
Now, i know the basic rules... "dont put games of other regions unless you're sure about it", "dont update your console if you cant update your modchip" and so on...
However, i belived that if i stayed clear of Nintendo-Made games (Smash, Mario, and such...) it would be ok. But here is my question...
I would like to get my own backups, knowing which games are safe or not to play... is there a guide/list or site that can point that out for me? Like "These games have updates" or "These games are reported to have made Modchips no working anymore" and so on... i just want some guideline, so i dont end up with a brick or loose my modchip just because i didnt ask.
I know i know i should just grab a new modchip. from a good source. But right now i cant... and plus, i think this could help some newbies out.

Yes to the first, no to the second. There has NEVER been an update that has effected modchips. Not in the slightest. Even the oldest chips and the newest firmware versions still work perfectly.

Your problem is the 001 diskcheck error. The 001 check is a program in the game itself that crashes the console if it detects a modchip running, it has nothing to do with the wii's firmware. It is found in all first party nintendo games since super mario galaxy.
If you really have a clone chip then the wiikey update disk will run to the end and then fail. If the disk simply cannot be read, then more likely you are burning it incorrectly.
But assuming you really do have a clone that cant be updated your best bet is to install the homebrew channel and boot the games through Gecko OS, which will bypass the 001 diskcheck. Guide to installing HBC is here.
And just for the record, its perfectly safe to use any and all of the wii's online services with your modchip. You don't have to fear taking it online.
Just to see if i got this right, even though i have a Clone Wiikey that's not updatable, the worst that can happen to me is having a game that i cant play?
As long as i keep using NTSC(u) games, my console is going to be ok for all my games?
