I have been trying to get rid of all the background of the image below and just leave the main object, the gate.
I have tried many times and made a total balls up of it each time (i been at it 4 days now and just cant seem to be able to do it).
Is anyone able to help me and erase all the background and just leave the gate so I can insert the gate into another image.

The gate used to be located on image 2 but removed in the 1900s to a location half a mile away where image 1 is taken. I am trying to recreate the look of what the gate would have looked like in image 2.

There would have been 2 posts, one on each side but in 1920s it was removed and only the one remain. The gate shown in image 1 used to located here and it was a gravel driveway for horse and cart.

Image 1 (the gate in 2009 at new location)

Image 2 (where the gate shown above would have been in 1900s)

I have been trying using Gimp and also Paint Shop X2 but no joy, it just frustrates me thats some can master this software and i cant. Photoshop wont install on my pc. If I cant do it in 4 days what chance do i have of ever doing it.

I thought I had put up the finished images but seems I have forgot.

The before Image was the gate as shown here
http://www.virtualhunterston.eu.org/whitegate.htm

The final result is the two image at the bottom of this page

Thanks to the person that made the gate transparent. I know my 1900s recreation not perfect but is better than nothing.

Let me know what you think of my result?
