I have tried different burning programs, but no matter what I try I keep getting failures.
For some reason I suddenly can't use the tried and trusted media that I've been using on this burner all along. It completely rejected my Verbatim + and -R's, which really shocked me because those are supposed to be the way to go. I was using Phillips but I could only use Nero and no other burning program but I had about a 90 percent success rate with them. As I live in a remote area I have a hard time getting more. I bought TDK-R's today, which I used to use religiously with this burner with no problem at all..and my firmware is up to date for the burner. Oh yeah..I usually burn at 4x but I just thought I'd try it at a different speed this one time.
Here's my Nero log:

You know, there's always the possibility that your burner's crapping out.
I wish I had a dollar for everyone that posts here that seem to discount the fact that their hardware may have failed and refuse to even consider it.

Well, yes, I have considered that. I'm just trying to see if it might be something else before I buy another one. Do burners suddenly become selective in their old age and decide the don't like media that used to be no problem?
The burner is 2 years old and is used often.

First of all, sorry. My reply was a little harsh. No reason (that I care to go into) for that.
2 years is an eternity for a DVD burner, IMHO.
Define often. I burn on an average 3-5 DVDs a day (365 days a year).
I don't expect my burners to be in service for more than 1 year. In fact, I replace them BEFORE they start giving me problems at about the 1 year mark.
I'm lucky that I live in a major metropolitan area so I never pay more than $40.00 for a DVD-RW drive.
So anyway, there's really no way to be 100% sure short of selective swapout. The only other thing that I can think of is trying to write a data DVD and doing a verify after writing.
2 years? Time to think about a new drive.

Well I go through phases where I burn several dvds a day for a few weeks straight, and at times I've gone for a month or so without using it. This burner is a lightscriber and I used to use it a lot for that too. My hubby is a musican and I do his CDs for him. Sometimes I fire off like 50 in a run. I know that DVD burning is different CD burning but it does get used a lot for one thing or another.
I burned about 100 successful DVDs before this started happening. My drive could be crapped out, but I noticed that my TDKs from previous runs are the real deal and this batch has the TDK logo but is CMC.
I suppose the thing that makes me wonder is that it completely rejects verbatims and those were the real thing. That's why I started using all of these other brands again.

That's the problem right there. CMC are the worst discs you can get.
Quote: Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
That tends to be bad media which makes sense to my previous sentence.

Hi,
per JoeRyan here at afterdawn, cmc mag is really not all that bad. You may need to update your firmware on your burner to optimise the burning conditions for the cmc mag disc. This is perhaps the reason for the key medium error message you are getting.

Well, I tried those dvds in someone else's burner and they didn't work either. I had thought my burner's firmware was up to date but it wasn't, so I did that, but they still didn't work.
It seems in this case it was a bad batch. In the past, my burning problems weren't media related. I bought some other discs today and they burn just fine.

The moral of the story is find media that works and stick with it.

I'm going to start buying them online. The only reason I haven't in the past was because the postal service where I live is terrible and if I get anything I ordered at all, I might get it within the next 10 years.
But, it's better than hit-and-miss.

These are my discs of choice, they work well in burners/players old and new. For those who don't update firmware they are also a good choice.
