hi if i am in the wrong forum then i apologise now

i need help setting up my laptop so i can remotely access my main computer that i want to use as a server so i can pick individual media files ie movies and watch the media stored on that through my laptop can anybody help me i have looked at vlc forums and to be honest i do not understand what they are telling me can some put it into idiot proof terms so i can do it
