a brand new and powerful computer, with the primary hard drive briefly used on a previous computer.
windows xp already installed but had to undergo a repair install and the person who installed did so without removing Internet Explorer 7 first. it went back to IE6 which works ok, everything else also works on the new computer but after upgrading to IE7, it will not open AT ALL. there's only the dreaded message "internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close".

IE6 works properly if i go back to it. and i removed IE7 and re-installed numerous times and got the same problem.

tried numerous methods including file checker (/sfc scannow), re-registering both the windows update AND the internet explorer dll files, disabling third party browser extentions, resetting IE settings, restoring advanced settings, and more.

all of which did not fix the problem.

like i said it's a brand new computer, works fine with everything else including IE6.
i also have kaspersky anti-virus and other protection software running. no infections found.

is there anything else that can be done to fix this without formatting?

thanx in advance.

You can try to uninstall all versions of IE on your computer, and DL and reinstall from Microsoft.

I think I have had this problem before, there seems to be a glitch when upgrading sometimes. So if you uninstall all versions and reinstall IE7 you should be fine.

I'll be happy to try that, but is it even possible to uninstall IE6?
i only disabled it through add/remove windows components, then installed IE7 and enabled it again. still no luck.

I saw.. no comment.. If people must use insecure non standards compliant rubbish that's up to them. Don't understand anybody using ie when far better browsers are available.

the said malfunction is on my mom's new computer, she's not a heavy computer user and only needs a browser to open e-mails and stuff.
i actually use firefox most of the time on my own computer, but there are certain plug-ins and language compatibility that work best with IE and don't work properly (if at all) on other browsers, so i use it when i need those. plus, IE7 works fine on my computer. seems to me it should work on a brand new and better one.

and Silo45, i've tried most of the methods in that link before you posted it. the only thing i didn't try yet is re-installing IE6 (method 4 in the link). if that won't do the trick, mom's gonna have to stick with IE6 or a reformat is in order.

thanx anyway.
