hi,

i just bought a modded jap wii, But i does not know which chip is installed.(i forgot to ask the previous owner). currently my wii is 3.1J, but i have trouble playing super smash bro brawl.

1)Can i check which mod chip is installed without opening the wii?
2)is it safe to update to the latest version? 3.4J?

Any advice?

You can get an idea though. If you enter your wii's serial number here http://www.wiidrives.com/list you can see what chipset you have. If you have a DMS, D2A or D2B wii then theres a very good chance that you have a wiikey. If you have a D2C, D2C2, or D2E wii then theres any number of chips it could have and no way to guess.

Your troubles with brawl could indicate a wiikey as well, but it could just as easily be burning problems. The game is notoriously hard to get a good burn of.
