Hi all,

I have slowly been backing up my dvd collection since January this year and have had very few problems (thanks mainly to this forum -- thanks people) but I have never been able to achieve the ripping and writing speeds that I have read about here.

I have seen some previous posts discussing dma, and software settings but none of these have solved my problem.

I have been using dvd shrink with fairly good ripping and compressing times, but it takes me between 50-70 minutes to write a dvd disc using record now dx 4.5 and nero 6.

The dvd writer I am using is a Sony DRU-510A which is capable of writing DVD-R discs at 4x. The dvd discs I am using are princo 4x dvd-5 discs.

I have configured both nero 6 and record now as per the guides and posts on this forum and have also enabled dma on my machine. My thoughts are now turning towards whether my other hardware (such as processor speed) are causing problems. My cpu is an AMD Athlon 1.2ghz processor.

If anybody has any other suggestions for that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Well update ur firmware and download DSS from the sony storage site.

I have same drive and I'm burning @ 4x.ANd it only takes my 20-25 mins to burn a disc.Right now I am using PIO.But when using DMA it burn @ the same speed.

PIO will use up more CPU power then DMA.DMA will mainly use RAM instead of the cpu.So IF u switch to PIO it will hit ur CPU hard, depending if ur system is slow.

wraven,

You should consider yourself extremely lucky -

First because you're not having trouble in general -

Second, Because the discs you are using aren't the best (by far) - when you do have problems, start looking first at your media -

Third, unless you have the minimum of at least 1 Gig of RAM be happy :-)

and Fourth, many times it's "Me, me - I burn in 3 minutes" "Slow, slow, I burn in 22 seconds" when in reality person # 2 has no idea how to burn at all -
In other countries it's called El Granda Toro Poo, Poo :D) lol

Be happy, and Welcome to the Club :P

Well first u can't have both of those burning apps installed in the same system.Remove one or the other. If u remove RecordNow make sure to use the Clean Reg tool it comes with.

Pete is right look at ur media first.Im currently using Ritek G04's.When using Nero 6 make sure u select 4x writing speed...Update all M$ patches, firmware,software....

IF ur lucky that will help.

Oh yes you can.

They are perfectly happy together in the same system, with NO conflicts at all (other than User Error, eg running both programs at the same time and trying to use the same burner from each program: gotta be real silly to try THAT!!).

Have a read of this old thread (long thread), with particular respect to the co-existance of Nero and RecordNow Max:

Good advice about RegClean..

Good Quality media is a MUST.

The Sony can be a bit fussy at times (lots of people have problems with them).

Have Fun...

Life is just more of the same:

Thanks for your suggestions everybody. I will definitely buy a couple of higher quality dvd discs and see if they make a difference. I'll also update the firmware. Thanks for the suggested posts drchips. They were pretty interesting reading and make me realise I need to do a bit more reading on some of the more technical issues involved.

Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions.
