VLC - bad sound *sometimes*

Hi,
I am thrilled to have found VLC to play some archived dvd+R discs that I have. First disc worked great - video & audio. Disc #2 & #3 had video but poor audio. Audio volume is very low (despite volume settings) and sounds choppy & distorted. I'm on a G3 iBook, running Panther. Any advice?
