Hey Guys,
Just wanted to ask a quick question about DVD regions and playability. I know that DVD has the same region codes like VHS did (NTSC and PAL) but was wondering what a blank DVD-r would be? What I mean is, I have a DVD recorder and I record from TV to DVD-r. I live in Canada so my region format is NTSC, but would that DVD-r that I just recorded work in Europe or Australia? Are blank DVD-r's region free and can play anywhere? Do most conventional DVD players play both formats (NTSC and PAL)?

Hi ECMoney, Here is the way I understand it.You can rip a dvd to copy it and make it region free. But it doesn't change the video format(PAL or NTSC). So even if a NTSC dvd is region free, it won't play on a PAL system. There are some more expensive players that can play either video format. But the standard rule is that you can't just swap dvds from one video format to the other without some type of conversion. The region code and video format are 2 different things.

Most DVD players in PAL countries will play NTSC discs (as long as the TV will also, which again shouldn't be a problem if it less than 5-7 years old)

Most NTSC countries players will not play PAL discs though.

That is perfect, so most newer DVD players in Europe and Australia will be able to play NTSC format DVD's.
I do not have to change anything on the DVD itself from my end.

No , nothing to change your end !: )

It does depend on DVD Player and also the TV at the European end though...

I live in U.K & have a 5-7 yr old 28" TV & Sony DVD Player (also a silver Sony PS2 w/ DMS3 chip & Progressive scan - lol).
There is NO problem playing NTSC here !: ]-~
