Currently using a fresh install of XP Pro SP1 Retail. I'm using a Sony DRU-530 to burn. If I burn at 2X, the DVD will play in my PC using the Sony burner or my Hitachi 16X DVD player. If I burn at 4X, then not only will the DVD not play in either drive, it's not seen in any application (PowerDVD, Explorer, etc) at all. This is regardless of media, regardless of +/-R or +/-RW.

Here's the really odd part. I'm using a Radeon 7500 All-In-Wonder video card. If I allow XP to run using just the default Microsoft Radeon drivers, then all DVDs are recognized and playable whether I burn at 2X or 4X. Only AFTER I install ANY version of the ATI Catalyst Video Drivers do I get the problem with discs burned at 4X.

Uninstalling the drivers does no good. Once I install them, the only way to get the capability back is to restore the OS using my homemade restore DVD which loads ONLY the basic Microsoft default drivers.

All DVDs play fine in my set-top players regardless of burn speed.

Any ideas?

Have you researched any of these problems through some of the ATI sites? Catalyst drivers aren't always the best as I continuously had problems with a similar ATI card.

Yeah - nothing there. I've been searching the ATI forums for days now. It's a touchy topic because it only occurs with home-burned movies and folks with a clue rarely open up about 'questionable' practices in a mainstream forum...

It's a lost cause. No one I've spoken with has any ideas.

It's a long shot, but if you happen to have another video card you could swap with then it might be worth seeing if there is any change. Ya never know ...

Already did it. I tried a Radeon 8500, a Ti4400, and an old MX 440. No joy. I'm going to slick the OS and start from scratch - this makes no sense at all...

Good Luck to you and let us know what happens after the install.
