My old Windows 2000 computer is in it's death spasms. I have an XP (Home Edition) machine available.

Do any of you have experience with running Shrink (and Decrypter) on both platforms? Is Windows 2000 that much better, such that I should go to the effort to resuscitate that machine? Or maybe stated a different way, have many of you had good luck with XP?

thanks.

Yes, you should be able to run both Dvd Decrypter and Dvd Shrink with no problems.

However, neither program is updated any longer, you may want to consider upgrading.

DvdFab Hd Decrypter to rip. http://www.dvdfab.com

Dvd Shrink is still a good transcoder if no serious compression is necessary. Use Dvd Rebuilder for higher compression backups.

Imgburn is the updated burn engine from Dvd Decrypter. Free from http://www.imgburn.com

It's also a good idea to use either FixVts or VobBlanker after ripping, before transcoding to render the files a little cleaner and more dvd compliant.

More options, links, and guides are available in the top two links in my sig.

You definitely want to go with XP if for no other reason than Microsoft no longer support NT 2000 in any way...

The computers we have at work came pre-loaded with XP when we got them several years back and the company re-imaged all of them with NT 2000..

They sent a crew into our office about 2 months ago and re-imaged them back to XP now.. Reason given, Microsoft would no longer support, wouldn't provide security/critical updates, etc... So they said they were forced to upgrade us back.

Microsoft normally only supports an older OS for 2-3 years after they introduce a newer version... Since Vista has been out for 2 years now and they're working on Windows 7 (currently in beta), unfortunately, they'll probably drop support for XP a year or so after Windows 7 gets its final release...

Are you sure? I have yet to see any MS product behave properly on it's release date. There will probably be at least a dozen patches in the first 60 days. Maybe by December 2010.

Which wont be that big of an issue imo, atleast not for myself, and given the praise Windows 7 has received so far. We just have to hope there are no major alterations between the beta and final release that will effect the stability.

@MysticE, you have a great point but so far Windows 7 is everything vista should have been.
