do i need specific software to play movies or back up games on the wii. it won't play movies right now. just wanted to know before i joined a download site.

Ok, before I say anything else: DO NOT JOIN A DOWNLOAD SERVICE.

All those pay services are scams and do nothing but provide links to free software and free torrent sites.

That said, it is completely possible to play DVD movies and backup games on the wii, though playing DVD movies is not really recommended since the wii's DVD drive is not designed to play movies and will wear out if you use it in that way regularity. Backup games are fine though, and there's a very nice guide right on the front page in plain sight. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/735325
