Hello to all

i just needed a little advice on puchasing a new pc for our home
we currently have a
dell dimension DIM 2400
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4CPU 2.636GHz
2.66GHz, 256MB of ram w/ XP home edition version 2002 SP2

i know that i am out of memory , my computer is extremly slow
i have to constantly do scans and defrags to keep it moving and i am getting very fustrated

i am not sure if i would benefit from adding memory to this current PC or just buying a new one with updated programs and more memory

our computer is used for kids school help,internet surfing mainly, and i work with family photos in which i was told that by storing by photos on USB Flash drives would help free up my computer and may not bog it down as much

so just looking for opinions here and if i was to buy a new PC, what is a recommended amount of memory and hard drive to keep from this happening again, if i buy i never want to go through this slow pc stuff again because of lack of memory

thanks for the help

Bump up your RAM first.

You are running a very minimal amount of RAM and probably swapping out to the HDD so much that your system is choking.

Specs for your system:

Standard Memory: 128 MB (Removable)
Maximum Memory: 2 GB
Expansion: 2 Sockets
CPU & ChipSet: Intel Pentium 4 Intel 845GV
Intel Celeron Intel 845GV

My sister-in-law has the same system running 384MB of RAM and it was "dog slow".

I shopped and was able to find 2GB (2 x 1GB) of PC-3200 (DDR400) RAM, the same type as your computer uses, for $19.95 after rebate.

Your computer isn't that slow, but is choking from lack or RAM.

I did a quick check at Newegg. Cheapest right now is 44.99 after rebate, but periodically you can find it for less.

so i can go from 256mb of ram to 2 gb on my computer
can i do this myself or should i have someone else
is it difficult
i was told that i was just a matter of adding the chips in and
if i got 2 1gb chips then i assume that the 256mb chip would be removed and no longer used
will i loose anything that is on my computer?

-->YES
can i do this myself or should i have someone else
-->You can do it yourself
is it difficult
-->On a Dell it should be realtively easy
i was told that i was just a matter of adding the chips in and
if i got 2 1gb chips then i assume that the 256mb chip would be removed and no longer used
-->Yes, you would remove the 1 x 256 or 2 x 128 and replace them with the 2 x 1GB
will i loose anything that is on my computer?
-->No
