Removing commercials/adverts from TV recordings

I am going to be recording some TV shows using my capture card and then encoding them into xvid files. I need a program to remove commercial breaks from them. It would also be usuful to get rid of any junk I record before the show comes on, and after. Does anyone have any suggestions for programs I can use?

Try Avidemux.
Drag the AVI onto the window.
Set Video, Audio and Format as shown.
Use the slider and the A/B buttons to mark the commercial then 'Edit' > 'Delete'
When complete click on the 'Save' logo and give the new file a name (including the extension) e.g. newfile.avi
