My xbox recently got the three rings so I used a towel to overheat it and restarted and it worked fine. What I am wondering is, how long does it last. I dont want to send my box in for repair because it has been modded and I dont want to pay a hundred to get it fixed. Anyone got a time frame or a good place to send it when it does stop working

Mine lasted another three months. I've heard much less though, in typical cases. I was really aggressive about the thing.

Typical users average 2-4 weeks of extra life.

Check craigslist in your area, there are folks who will do it for $25 in some areas, some of them will also come to you, fix the system, take payment, and leave.

you should do the xclamp replacement. Some people have revived their xboxs with this method and it has lasted them for over a year.

Doubt it. I never heard of the towel thing lasting a year, that is probally b*llshit. Regardless you guys need to stop wrapping your consoles in towels. You are lessening your chances of performing a successfull fix. When you wrap it in towels you may get lucky and get it to work but the damage you are doing may nullify a legitmate fix attempt. When you wrap in towels the manufacturers acceptable rate of heat rise at less resilent components such as the capacitors is exceeded. You are creating damage that wasn't there before. Caps have dissimilar metals or chemicals inside and when you heat them faster than they were designed you compromise their integrity. So hypothetically if you towel trick your console and it works then fails 2 weeks later and send it to a guy that will reflow the cpu and gpu and xclamp it you still have damaged caps that will not outlast the reflow and xclamp fix. A professional will warm the board at a controlled rate which the caps can withstand, and then reflow the failed processors. Contrary to that when you towel the thing you are creating fractures in the brittle lead free solder that may not may not show up till after a reflow, thus screwing up your xbox again. PLEASE STOP WRAPPING THESE THINGS IN F*CKING TOWELS!!!!!!!

(oops sorry the quote about "one year" was apparently about an xclamp fix and not a towel trick, my bad. either way no more towels)
