which is better?

My drive as suddenly quit playing all backups, and just tried something i found on youtube and now im getting a "White screen of death" which i feel like its a step up from the nothing i was getting before.

i was told by "mikeismad" in a simalar topic i made about this problem im having with my 360 to just replace lens. gave me link for one on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/XBOX-360-TOSHIBA-LAS...1QQcmdZViewItem

but i have also read around internet about same problem and read replacing the whole dvd drive. and i have found several samsung drives costing about double what the lens is gonna run me.

so my questiong is it worth saveing the money to put lens in or is it to much of a hassel. im kind of on a budget so want to spen as less money as possible but also dont want to buy lens then screw that up and have buy replacement drive anyways.

1. is this problem a lens issue and getting new one would fix it and so would getting new drive?
2. how difficult is replacing lens?
3.will any samsung 360 drive work? or is there a specific for each samsung 360?

just found this on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/Samsung-Toshiba-TS-H...93%3A1|294%3A50

will this one work in my samsung 360?

Could well be the lens.
is your drive playing originals still?
its very easy to replace the lens, there are loads of tutorials to follow if you google it.
if it is your drive, you will need to extract the key from your current drive and insert it into your new one.
any samsung drive will do.

ya it wont play orginals either. and how do i extract the key? i read around a bit and think all i would have to do is flash the replacement drive with the backup i made of my orginal drive. is this correct? then after i would just flash it with firmware to play back ups?

If you replace the laser, you will need to desolder a static point before you install it. Some ebay sellers offer to do that for you, most don't.

If you don't have access to a soldering iron, then take in to account that you'd need to spend another $10 for an iron on top of the price of the laser.

That's why many will just suggest replacing the whole drive instead of just the laser.

Im sorry bhetrick, but i dont think that replacing the laser requires any desoldering. I've replaced my drives laser before and did not do any desoldering. I never got a white screen, but I understand you had the disc read error, and as i said its most likely a laser problem. I know both of these facts by experience. Replacing the laser is not very hard. Just use some common sense and your brain. And by the way for future reference, you should not double post. If your thread gets moved down the list and you think that might be the reason noone is replying, simply post something on it so it gets moved back up. By the way, you dont really need to fully replace the drive. The cheapest way is to get the laser. It might cost you 10 dollars for a new laser. To fully replace the drive you need to flash the drive. That requires hardware that may exceed 10 dollars and aside from that you need to find out how to flash which can be very difficult to learn and you can run into many roadblocks.

It's bad practice to confuse your experience as facts. So... let me repeat myself. "Some ebay sellers offer to do that for you, most don't." And low-and-behold... the very first auction I looked up:
