Okay i have a Softmodded Toshiba Samsung H439A Xbox 360 DVD drive.
The firmware it uses is iXtreme 1.5 (the latest i believe).

Now is it possible if i simple write a .avi movie file to a DVD-R and put it in my Xbox?
Would it play? or would i still need to use a double layer disc for anything i use on it?

Do you have internet conection on your 360? If not, the whole discussion is useless because you have to download an update.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

All you need is an XP machine with Service Pack 2 installed on it and you can share the folder with the avi file on your network and stream it to your xbox 360. I do it all the time with avi files of tv episodes.

This is very correct. In order to watch video files, you will need to install an update that allows you to watch avi and mpeg files.

To answer your question.

I tested this for you since I had a few AVI data disc laying around. The answer is yes you can burn AVI files to a DVD-R (I used Nero data disc option to burn) and loaded them with the video player.

As stated above you will need to download an update to play Xvid. The download is free.

The easiest way to play Xvid is using TVersity to stream them. So now you have a few options to perform this task.

it is automatic if u are connected to live. when u try to play the avi file u will get an error and ask if u want to download a update. u can also find it in the marketplace somewhere listed as "optional media update" i think it is in the "X" category of the video sections

If you send me questions on Live about modding or anything related i will block you. Dont be an idiot.
