I have a region 1 dvd which i would like to backup so i can play it on a standard DVD (region 2) player, i thought i should be able to do this using my Computer using either DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter but i havent been able to yet, for example, DVD shrink says that my External DVD recorder isnt set to the correct region to start with, so i'm stuck.
what should i be doing ? please.

Hi,
you can use dvd shrink and on preferences select region 0 ( all dvd players can play the dvd) and back up the dvd. The resultant dvd can be played on any dvd player.
Hope this helps

sorry i am being a dumbo, but i put the DVD in my lap top or my external DVD Writer and DVD shrink tells me there is a Drive region mismatch, the current region is 2 and it will allow me to change it to region 1 (with 4 changes left).
so if i did change the DVD writer to region 1, would i then be able to, with DVD shrink, backup in region 2 ?.

You might want to try AnyDVD (from slysoft.com).
It works in the background and removes the region code, encryptions, copy protections and a lot more.. Slysoft offers a fully functional 21-day free trial so you can see how it works before you buy and for me, it was definitely worth the price..
With the program running, just pop the DVD in your drive (doesn't matter what region) and let AnyDVD scan the disc (could take a while if there's a lot of encryptions or protections on it).. If the status window shows the disc contained "structural protection", use the built-in AnyDVD ripper to rip to your HDD.. Once you've done that, point DVD Shrink at the files (or the disc if no "structural protection") and you're good to go.. Set DVD Shrink for Region Free (Region 0 as previously mentioned) and when you're done, you'll have a back-up that will play in any DVD player..

@timmytoad
If your intention is just for one disc, you can change your region to 2, rip it, and change back to region 1.
If you are planning to do this often, I think you can set the region for each drive. So get 2 drives, set one for region1 and set other for region 2 (DVD-ROM).
If you are comfortable flashing your drive?s firmware, ?google it?. You will find the way to deal with.
Good luck!

now sorted out thanks, a few hours ago, in desperation, i let dvd shrink change the default region of my DVD writer to be region 1 and it backed up the dvd's just fine and it burnt them for All regions, so i now well pleased.
so as i only changed my external dvd drive to be region 1, perhaps my integral dvd drive will still be region 2, so i have the best of both worlds, LOL.
thanks lads for your help
