I bought Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 16X.
I've found the highest score I can get is a 93 by burning at 8x.
When the score doesn't go up is it due to the DVD burner?
I think this HP came with an Atapi.

Talk about a loaded question....there are so many variables in the equation. A 93 is actually pretty good, the main factor is how well it plays. Really what else matters?
If you are concerned, you can post a burn log from whatever program you are using to burn your disks or you can go to this thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/540688
and post your scan. This will get some input from some of the best here regarding your scores.

Learn to live with 95 and 93 scores. That's about the best you will do and as ferguj1 said if it plays well(no pixilating ot stops) and also if it can be copied easily then it's an excellent burn. JM2C

What's the exact brand name of your dvd-rw drive?
Use neroinfotool, dvdidentifier, dvdinfopro to find the exact model# and current firmware version and post back.
HP used a ton of different brand named burners, not just HP drives only. Sometimes HP,rebadged liteon/benq/etc.Example:There's at least 3 different manufacturers for the HP 640 series:C/E/and I. The "I" was a benq 1655,"E" may have been the liteon, and "C" was the ligit pc of crap HP,LOL!
Sometimes a firmware update may be needed to help control the writing strategy. Post back that info and maybe you can get her tweaked in better.
1 easy test to make sure your backups are ok: Try re-ripping them onto your harddrive, using your main programs. If you can get them onto the HD,you're ok. If not,crc error will stop you. Get a CRC error, and you're in trouble.

I burnt a Taiyo Yuden DVD-16x at 8x and it got a quality score of 70. Halfway through there was a big spike. What could cause something like that?
Do scratches on the DVD before burning effect something like this?

Oh and they were $39.99 for 50. I don't know if that is considered the value line or not.

How do I edit messages so I don't have to post 5 different messages?
Anyway I looked it up and the DVD-Rs that I have are apparently the value line because they are TYG03.
Is there any way to tell which are the high quality ones? These came in a cakebox and all that and I thought I was getting the quality stuff here.

To edit your post click the pencil and paper icon in the upper right corner of the post box.
TYG03 doesn't necessarily mean value line, that is just the media code for the 16x -R disks. The only sure fire way to know what you are getting is to buy from a reputable location such as SuperMediaStore or Meritline.

That is what I thought too ZoSo and I had actually put that in my post, but I was on SMS while I was posting and they list some of teh premiums being available in tape wrap. May be something new as I don't recall seeing that before, course I don't use printables, but still think I would have noticed :)

The few scans I ran on my Ty watershields were around 93-94 after burned and before printing. I burn at 8x on them and never scanned them after they were printed..

The whole scanning thing is fraught with too many variables that affect to final score.
- Is is best to scan in the drive making the burn, or another?
- Does it make any difference if a scan is done in a Lite-on, NEC or BenQ?
- Should the scanning speed be set to 4X, 8X, or 12X?

Don't know how to interpret this. I always use modern burners and try to match my media to them.
Here's a scan of a 16X TYG03 burned at MAX, 20X in my Pioneer and scanned in my NEC:
Here's a scan of an 8X TYG02 burned at MAX, 12X in my Pioneer and scanned in my BenQ.
Not too shabby. This is why I often chime in about 'burn at half rated speed for quality' comments. I ain't buying it.

Wouldn't own a Lite-on. All 3 of those drives are superior to anything Lite-on has ever made.

Wait, I didn't say anything about the quality of a lite_on drive vs any drive; just said if you scanned with one the score would be 95 or less.
@ZOSO
Are you saying the present Pioneers are still good??

the newest ones may have a different chipset making them not quite as good. the NEC chipset in the Pioneers was the best IMO
