So I converted an AVI source file on my computer to MPEG2 using SUPER (by eRightSoft). I created an ISO image and burned it to a DVD using Nero. I played it on my PS3, ran like butter. I then played it on my Phillips DVP3980, and to my dissatisfaction, found the aspect ratio to be distorted and forced into fullscreen. So I go into the setup menu, change the TV Display option to 4:3 Letterbox, then to 16:9, only to discover no changes whatsoever. Finally, I tried using a different conversion program (TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress), but still the same problem.

Help?

Does this DVD have the proper dvd-format file structure ?
ie. Video_ts and Audio_ts folders?

Nope, just an iso containing an mpg file.

It will not play properly in the standalone dvd player,
until the project is authored as a proper DVD.

This means the finished dvd must contain an audio_ts and video_ts
folder. The audio_ts is usually empty, while the video_ts contains,
the vob, ifo and bup files.

So why does it maintain its aspect ratio when played on my PS3? I mean it still plays fine on the DVD player except for the fact that it stretches to fit the TV screen.

It's indeterminate. In general the firmware
in the machine determines how it's displayed.
Some dvd players may indeed play it, but it's not a part of the dvd
standard. If you want to be sure it will be played properly by
standalone players, you have to author it as I mentioned.
