I have encountered very much the same problem with my HP300i. It will not write to a third party DVD+R disk when making a backup of my DVD using Xpress Copy. However, it will write to a DVD+RW disk. It will format it first, then write without any problem. Here is another oddity. There is no problem making a backup of a DVD using DVD X Copy, however this method will use two disks.
