I have Windows File Sharing enabled on a local network. One of the shared folders contains about 75 folders and 30gb of files in those folders. Whenever accessing this shared folder it takes a very long time. Also opening any of the sub folders takes a long time 30-40 seconds. Is there anyway to speed this up, or any programs out there to use instead of windows file sharing on a local network.

1. Please quantify "slow". (specifically with regard to file transfer) ex. If I copy a xMB file from one PC to another it takes x sec. What would you expect and why?

2. What is the speed of your network connection.

3. Router type?

4. Number of nodes on the network?

In addition, remember that when you are using Windows file sharing any remote file access competes with any tasks running on the file sharing host. If the host is busy doing something, all access will affected. Speed of the PCs is critical if you are trying to perform activities as well as share files.

If you want something faster, consider a NAS box or dedicated file server instead of sharing off one PC.

File transfer is not bad, it is just the opening of the shared folder and subfolders. Also the selecting of a file. It typically takes anywhere from 3-5 minutes to open the shared folder or its subfolders.

As far as our network, we have a Linksys WRT350N router, 2 Linksys EG005W switches, and a Linksys EG008W switch. There are 15 computers all with Intel Pro/1000GT Network adapters. All computers wired with Cat6 network cable. There are approximately 30 shared folders on the network. All of the other shared folders respond very quickly. The only one that is slow is this one. As stated there are a large number of sub folders and a large number of files.

As far as moving them off of the computer, it is not exactly practical. The files are high and low res image files used in digital screen printing. They are edited on this computer using photo shop and ripped to the printer. We do need to access the shared folder to upload new images, or pull images for other uses.

I did not know if there was a faster way to access these files such as drive mapping or other software.
