So, it says on the manufacturers website in the FAQ that you cannot record one thing off TV while watching another if its through a cable box. Well, that is a feature that I would really like to have, so howcome my mom can record things on her VCR connected to cable and watch something else while recording? The reason the website gave for it not being able to do this was that the cable box wouldn't allow the player to view more than one channel at a time, or more than one that it is sending? in this case it should be the same for my mom shouldn't it be?

The VCR most likely has a cable ready tuner built in that depending on how you hook it up, you can view one channel while recording another. The DVD recorder most likely uses the cable box as a tuner (you didn't mention what make it is) so you can record only the channel that the cable box is tuned to. If your TV has more than one input source you can still view and record two different channels if you use a splitter. One line into the cable box to recorder to TV and one directly to the TV but any premium channels that don't go through the cable box will be scrambled.

the make of it is a GoVideo! VR3930, okay, so that would explain why the VCR can't record from all the channels on TV? because they're premium channels and they don't work?

there's now a standalone dvd recorder forums, just for DVR's!!(dvd recorders).

It's a new forum so post this question there to get it going, there's some real Hi fi junkies in there that'll be able to help.
