Hi,i have been trying to both encode and burn dvd-5's in a timely manner. Thus far i have not been able to burn in under 1 hour. I have several softwares that i have bought and downloaded. I am not ripping files any more because this takes to long. I use my downloaed AVI formats then i convert them to a direct stream audio/video sync saved file that i save AVI to my Iomega 500 gig ex HD drive,virtualdub1.8.8 from there on i convert the file to an MPEG-2 file using prism video converter From there i use either xilisoft avi-dvd conver to burn or AIMERSOFT dvd converter or dvd flick The encoding of these burn programs takes nearly 50 mins withxilisoft and 40 mins with the 2 others. The burning time is over 20 mins. Note: MPEG-2 files are from 900mb to 2 gigs and its all around the same encoding/burning duration. I use,if its relevent, maxell dvd-r and memorex dvd+dics(dvd-5).
:SPECS: Burner:External Burner DRX-84OU dvd/cd rewritable drive(SONY)
:SPECS:PC-ACER ASPIRE 5735-4774 Windows Vista home premium laptop (NOTE) Internal burner yeilds same outcome.

:SPECS:IOMEGA 500 GIG External HD.

Well, I'm a little confused with your post.

First, you state that it's taking over an hour to burn, but that doesn't really seem to be the case. Your burns are taking about 20 min., which is about what I would expect.

What you appear to be concerned about is the total processing time, which also seem about what I would expect based on experience.

I do not use the packages that you are using but I convert/burn .avi files onto DVD in MPEG format on a regular basis.

I ran the following test and it took me 65 minutes end-to-end.

System

AMD Athlon X2 5600
4GB RAM
Windows XP Professional

Source file:

720MB .avi file

Chaptered and converted to MPEG-2 using TMPGenc 4.0 Express
I do my chapter cuts and edits in the encoder (3 minutes)

Time 45 min.

Authored to DVD using TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6

Authoring time which includes chapterizing and adding titles and menus (5 min.)

DVD Image Creation time 8 minutes
(Converting 4.1GB of MPEG-2 files into DVD)

Burned to DVD-5 using Lite-On 1620 at 4X using TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6

Time: 10 minutes

So, my times were slightly faster. My biggest improvement over yours was creating the DVD. My encoding times were slower but I would expect that since I am using a slower AMD processor.

I don't know what to say. It could be your software. Since the largest difference between your results and mine appeared to be in Chaptering and creating the DVD file, you might try the free trial version of TMPGenc DVD Author to see if that's where you're losing time.

Good luck.
