Hi today i decided to replace my laser from my dvd drive to my brothers because i have a hitachi which was no longer reading backups. So i go the laser on the hitachi which still did not read games but that is not my problem. I decided to just put everything back together, and when I did the samsung did not respond. It would not open the tray and the laser would not respond...My first thought was that the power connector just wasnt connected, wrong! It was so i checked all the ribbons and they were all connected. So I have no idea what the matter is but it is not mine is the thing it's my little brothers, and I dont want to mess it up because he was nice enough to let me try and replace the lasers. If there is anything i can do please tell me as I have no idea what the problem could be. My guess is eathier I messed up one of the ribbons even though none of them are broken in half or anything. Could it be that the drive motor is just dead? Any help is greatly appreciated as I have no idea again.

It's hard to give a precise answer without being able to see the drive. Chances are good that it's a misaligned ribbon cable.

Well guys thanks for the advice i looked at the ribbon cables and they are all in all the way and in the right way. Like I said none are snapped off or anything it looks fine. So any other ideas? I was thinking about getting another samsung drive that is the exact same and just switch out the circuit boards, but i was wandering could it be the circuit board? Because it would suck to get a brand new drive and waste 40 bucks to find out it was the circuit board. By the way though the circuit board looks fine. Or could it be that the motor just died? Even though it is kind of wierd that it would to it when I decide to take it apart but it did always run really hard and loud the past month or two.

It could very well be the board died. The Samsungs are known for dying without any forseen reason. Usually when the board dies, if the owner doesn't already have their key from that drive, then the only way to retrieve the key (you need the key for a new drive) is to desolder the tsop and read it in a programmer.
I've done this for a number for Samsungs now and have still yet to hear the reason for the boards dying.
If the drive is dead then you'd be better off just getting a whole new drive. They're fairly cheap (~$30) on ebay and would save you the headache of trying to single out the problem with the original drive.

I just ordered the new dvd drive, the same model and everything so that i can just switch out the circuit boards, but I hope i just didnt waste my money and it is the board that is the problem!! No i dont have the key, but i did try to replace the laser so maybe even though the ribbons arent broke maybe there is something still messed up with the cables. I hope that is what it is. And it was working fine right before i tried to change the lasers so im sure this is the problem... One more question though, if it is the board could this be caused by it touching the carpet? It might have barely touched the carpet for a few seconds and i was just thinking, static electricity you know. But thanks for the help so far!

It could have been static. With any luck it is only a laser problem, though.

I'm assuming your board has the black epoxy on it? You'd have to remove the epoxy and desolder the chip which has the "SST" on it. Then you'll have to straighten out the legs and clean up any left over epoxy and solder from them. The you use a programmer to read the firmware from the chip.
If you get in a bind and find that you may need help, I do the desoldering and reading.

That it is.
I was getting ready to open my Samsung I use for ripping so I could snap a shot of the epoxy, and remembered you sent me that pic of your board.
I don't know what it is with the Samsungs. They just die for no reason. I swear if you fart too hard near the drive it'll quit working.

ok behetrick i appreciate your small tutorial, but I have never done anything like this, I dont want to mess up, and i also dont want to just spend 200 dollars on a new 360 over a dvd key. So if you could maybe make a youtube video on how to do it completely that would be awesome! But i understand if you cant...But you would be saving me 200+ dollars...Also i have never done any soldering but i am a quick learner, if you decide to make a video try to explain it as best you can. Thanks behetrick, and everyone else!

If you think you might be interested in me desoldering and reading your chip for you feel free to pm me. It's a lot cheaper than buying a new 360, seeing how you've already bought a new drive.
