Starview 4 USB HDD recording Probs

I have searched the forums on this site all day and I cannot find an answer to my current problem which is:
I have a 500GB HDD connected to my starview (the file system has been formatted from NTFS to FAT32). If I select direct record the picture just freezes with the message "recording INIT..." after 5 minutes there is still no change and I have to power off the box at the back. If I use the EPG (the EPG is a massive improvement on previous models so congrats to all involved)timer record i get the same thing? From what I understand I dont need anything on the HDD is this right? Mine is completely blank!
Is the HDD too big for the software / hardware on the box to handle? I used a 2GB memory stick and did a direct record and the picture on the TV was jumpy and un-watchable but then when I played it back it was fine!
I know its a long message guys but I would appreciate some help here.
