Hi, i'm new here but have been in the burning game for 5 years now but i've hit a brick wall that i can't seem to get over and need some help . .. . .

Long story short, for the past 5 years i've done everything in the same way and up until recently i've had around a 99% success rate. I use ConvertXtoDVD to convert .avi's to dvd, they burn it no probs - until now.
If i've already converted and burned successfully before i normally keep finished folder in a "ready to burn" folder in case a mate wants a copy of the same dvd, when i want to burn one of these i follow a simple process:
1) open dvd shrink > click open files
2) select the film folder in "ready to burn"
3) dvd shrink analyses whats there and brings up the details
4) press "back-up" and between 25-45mins later i have the dvd.

The problem i have is that it's started producing dvds that look like an old vinyl record, i've got a scan of a couple of the discs below. When trying to play them on pc or standalone it will either start/stop/start/stop/stop/stop/stop . . . oh . . . or won't play at all.
I have tried 3 different types of media and the latest are as follows:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:RITEKG05]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Ritek Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [RITEKG05]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V5.2.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

here is what they look like when burned:

I have no idea what has happened, thinking possibly the burner is on it's last legs, nothing that i am aware of has changed on my system or setup - i'm the only one who uses it and haven't updated any of the programs i use which could have explained this.

Has anybody ever produced discs like this and how was it rectified? I have a day off work tomorrow and just know at present i'm going to be sat here getting greyer and balder whilst fast becoming a major coaster producer!!

Any ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated

Cheers in advance

Which program are you burning with? Dvd shrink is a transcoder that can compress and break some encryptions.

Are you burning with imgburn or nero, an what speed are you burning at?

The pics you posted show a "bad burn" which could be caused by burning at too high of a speed. Burning at high speeds for too long can wear out the laser on the burner faster.

kingchunk, we don't talk about this "in case a mate wants a copy of the same dvd" as that is piracy which is not condoned on this site.

Apologies if my comment was suggesting illegal activity, i use a digital camcorder with my mates which records as a .avi file - currently trying to get the fun we had in the recent snow onto discs. I can see how you'd think that though, i shall be wiser with my wording in future :)

rtm27: If the video file is too large to fit onto a dvd i use dvd shrink to reduce the quality slightly to compress it to dvd size, also when burning from the pre-converted "ready to burn" folder i have been using dvd shrink as detailed above and i believe it uses Nero for the burning stage.
A data disc burned with nero (back-up of my original .avi files) burns perfectly and plays in my standalone divx/xvid dvd player.
I've just tried converting the files from "ready to burn" into an image using imgburn and then burning the image to disc also using imgburn - this method failed at 60% the 1st time but has just worked on 2nd attempt.
Looking thru all the different threads/forums i guess this could mean my hardware is starting to die but could also mean the media has problems. From the last lot of blank dvds i had they worked perfectly for approx 170 discs, the last 30 seemed dodgy.

i'm in a muddle!!!

Post your ImgBurn log.

First thing I can suggest is to stop the auto-burn after using dvd shrink. You can also slow down the burning speed to 6x or 8x.

You can also check to see if your burner needs a firmware update.

If you can, post the burn log from either nero or imgburn so we can see if the problem is there.

Switch from Riteks to Verbatims.

Is this The Same Burner You Started out with 5 Years ago?

King, I have used Ritek G05's for some time now, no probs. I think from your pics, your burner is shot.

King, any way to borrow a friend's / relative's external burner and give it a go ? If the same result, it is more likely the media and not the burner, if not, then perhaps it is the burner.

If you're already using ConvertXtoDVD and you're saving the DVD folder it creates, why not use ConvertXtoDVD to burn the additional copies.. Just point it to burn an existing project and select the folder you want... "Action" on top menu and select "Burn an already converted project". If you've already converted from .avi and it burned fine initially, there's no reason to need Shrink..

Isn?t this caused by changing of burning speed? If so, is it possible of multi-tasking? (May not be intentionally but also those running behind.)

Just a thought?

as i'd said before - i've not done anything different than i had done previously. I always burn at 4x speed and always make sure i'm not doing anything else on the pc whilst burning.

Anyway, i went and bought a new drive today (LG supermulti drive with lightscribe) and so far have a 100% success . . .

thanks for all your help and suggestions
