I hope that I can make this clear.

I looked at the hacking xbox 360 for dummies tutorial. I've confrimed that my drive is a phillips lite-on, so I know that goes in the benQ method of hacking. The problem I'm having is choosing the software for my first attempt. I installed i-xtreme 0.0.7.3beta
it would not update I kept getting an error. I decided to still take the chance and use the firmware but in the end it didn't work. I don't know the last time that the tutorial was updated but the version for i-xtreme has now reached version 8 and I looked at that one and noticed the lite-on firmware so now I'm really confused and don't know what to do. I read one of the posts talking about the 1.4 and the 1.5 firmware and the fact that next generation games might not work so I don't want to make the wrong decision please point me in the right direction.

I've done a little more research and found I have the 16d2s model so I know there is a lot more involved and takes a lot more than the usual methods any advice would be greatly appreciated there is just so many options and I want the best one.

No, that is not true. The Lite-ON drive requires additional steps. You need to extract your Key, Inquiry, Identify, and valid Serial data with a Lite-ON key extractor. As of right now, the most current software for the Lite-ON is 1.5.

There is going to be an update and the next firmware revision is going to 1.51. Then 1.6. You can read about it here.
