I've been burning and ripping my games as backups for the longest time. (in fact, all my 24 games have backups)
recently, I encountered a problem with my own ripped game: Devil May Cry 4.
After inserting the backup disc, playing for a couple of minutes, then it turns to: disc error (use cloth to wipe or something)
I assumed I had a bad burn, so i went ahead and reburned myself one (using the same rip), and same error.
I now assumed I had a bad rip, so i went and got myself another copy of a rip (just to prove the problem to myself) reburned and the problem is the SAME! *In the tutorial phase , i cant seem to get past it using the ripped game.
I honestly have no problem with this as I've already finished the game twice over. but i'm curious why I can't get this to work. (I always test my rips and all of them are fine, except this)
I always use Verbatim dvddl discs, and i always burn at 2x.
is it a just a bad burn? should i try another one perhaps?
When you start to get dirty disc errors, and you are using the proper media, there is really only a couple of things you can do. You could try and increase the laser strength by doing a POT calibration on the drive. If that doesn't work, I would go ahead and replace the laser because it is probably dying.
I had the exact same problem with Need For Speed Undercover yesterday. All of my other games (30 or so) have backups, I have burnt them all and they all work fine. But when I made the backup for NFSU, it gave me the "Unable to read disc" error, I burnt it again, same thing. I ripped it again, and got the exact same MD5 hash for the old iso file and the new iso file.
I tried checking the burnt discs with Abgx, it said it couldn't read layer break information (invalid field in CDB or something), but the rest of the stuff checked out.
Did you check the iso file or the burn-disc with abgx?
I made a backup of NFSUndercover and MidnightClubLA, the ISOs for both check out on abgx, but the burnt disc (which I verified right after burning) fails when checked with abgx. I think its the media, I am not using Verbatim. But all other 30 or so backups have never given me any problem.
One thing you can do (temporary fix) is to install the game with your original disc, and use the burnt disc to run the game. You will have to make sure that when you ripped the game and fixed it with abgx, that it didn't have to download a whole lot of stealth files to make it work, because I think otherwise on xbox live MS might be able to tell that your console is modded, as the installed game will have stealth files in different location and your game disc will have it in different location.
Try using Verbatim if you haven't already. Do you have a LiteOn in your xbox?
