Using Windows XP Pro SP3, Nero 6.6.0.16 burning software, MSI DVD+-R DVD+-RW writer, Sony DVD-R and SKC DVD+R media.

I'm wanting to write an ISO image file to DVD media. Using both DVD-R and DVD+R media, Nero writes and verifies burns as being successful. However, when reloading the DVD's into the writer, the computer doesn't recognise the disks at all!?

I'm using a new HDD to replace the previous lower capacity HDD. The previous system setup seemed to work OK. And I burnt a DVD-R disk using the same setup (XP Pro SP3, Nero 6.6.0.16, MSI writer), and the computer recognised the disk fine. But since changing the HDD, the system no longer recognises burnt DVD disks (including the previously burnt disk)!

I've tried searching the web using Google and searching this forum, but I have not found a specific answer to the problem of not being able to read these DVD disks.

A remote possibility is that the system may not have the required DVD decoders to read these disks. I've tried installing K-lite Mega Codec pack, but this didn't help.

Does anyone have any idea what is required to get the system to read DVD-R and DVD+R disks please?

First thing I would do is uninstall the Secondary Channel (assuming the burner is connected to the Secondary) and reboot to let the drivers be reinstalled.

Right click on 'My computer' > 'Properties' > 'Hardware' > 'Device Manager'.

Is this after changing HD?

Can you read the hard pressed (not recordable) DVD after changing HD?
Can you read the burnt disc in question in other PC or a player?

It could be;
Hardware setup issues (Hardware conflict? Check with Device Manager), or
DVD Drive (How old is your drive? Firmware up to date?), or
Media (SKC is classified as 3rd Class media at digitalFAQ.com.)

Is it possible to post latest Nero log (without serial# etc)?

Thanks for the replies.

Yes. One of the first things I did was uninstall the driver, reboot, and reinstall the driver. There seemed to be no improvement after this.

Nero burnt and verified disks after installing the new hard disk drive. BTW, disks written before (on old hard drive) were also burnt and verified successfully.

Unfortunately I don't have any DVD-ROM (application installation) disks to test if the writer can read them. However, the writer can read CD-ROM (application installation) disks OK.

I don't have other DVD writers or readers to check the burnt DVD+-R disks.

According to Device Manager there are no conflicts.

The MSI writer is about 5 years old (but only lightly used). There is a firmware upgrade which I have just applied. And the writer is now able to read the burnt disks (but only just)! The reading of these disks seems a bit slow, but the disks are definitely being read!

I suspect it is the media which may be the problem here(?) Previously the writer was able to burn and read an Imation DVD-R disk before I upgraded the hard disk drive. But it seems that this writer does not work well with Sony DVD-R and SKC DVD+R disks, although the firmware upgrade seemed to improve compatibility between the writer and the new disks.

Nevertheless, I've (tentatively) ordered a couple of new Lite-On DVD writers to replace this and another (CD) writer to improve chances of compatibility and availability of firmware upgrades.

We'll see how the MSI writer goes with the updated firmware. At this stage the writer works, albeit a bit sluggishly.

Thanks again!

I?m glad to hear that you made it to work.
Though getting a new drive must be a right move even though it is not broken. I think that old drives were not designed to work with recent media. (I meant that drive?s max speed is X8 or lower against +-R media which most of now are x16.) Firmware should make best arrangement, though there may be a limitation.
Just my thoughts?
