I seem to be buying more and more DVD's to back up my originals! I then thought why dont I just rip all my DVD's and Blu-Ray to a HDD then either use a Home Theatre PC to get it to my TV, or another method if anyone has a better ideas.
The problem is the Blu Ray discs, I can rip my discs to my External HDD no problem, but I don't know the best way to get them to the TV keeping full resolution, and whatever the highest quality sound track they may have on that disc be it Dolby True HD, DTS HD MA. I currently have a Denon 4308A Amp/Receiver, plus a Denon 3800BD player and 7.1 Surround set up. I realise that putting my discs onto a HDD will kind of render the Denon 3800BD redundant.
I really want to get a system to do this, as I already have far too much clutter in my lounge!
If you are willing to compromise on the sound output, ie. downconverting TrueHD to AC3 & DTS-MA to either DTS or AC3, then the simplest method is either remuxing the *.m2ts Blu-ray movie file with TSMuxer, or transcoding. This will give you a 1080P video with the downconverted audio. The reason: HTPCs cannot readily playback the full HD audio. Also, if you are sending audio via SPDif (I would assume you use HDMI), then it wouldn't work sending full HD audio anyway, as maximum bitrate throughput is about 1536kbps. Most full HD audio is way over that bitrate.
If you are using a PSP3 console for playback, then it can be done. Time to remux can be as little as about 20 minutes. Transcoding takes serious conversion time, though.
Most remuxed BD movies will have a final filesize of around 13-20GB, depending on original filesize. Also, be aware, this reduction can cause more noise in the video PQ, especially on older MPEG2 BD movies. I found this out when remuxing Predator, so I went the transcode route.
