Is it possible to pull firmware off of an xbox 360 wireless adapter?

It has a firmware. A basic instruction code that tells the xbox how to use it. The same thing with generic usb wireless adapters. Netgeat, linksys, d-link... Whatever, they all have firmware that their companies release updates for. Firmware, instruction set, whatever you want to call it.

Ugh, you still can't dump a firmware for it. And if you did, it would have no use.

I don't think anyone has looked into messing with the official MS wireless adapter. It makes sense though as most wireless adapters run through usb and cost less.I've seen the MS official wireless adapters go for $100 dollars, which is a raping price for consumers. If you dump the firmware it might be interesting to try out on different wireless adapters if you know how to mess with firmware.Just dumping the firmware from it is not enough you will have to modify the firmware in order for it to work with anything different.

Glad to see someone is giving the idea a chance! :) I know there is someone out here that can work with firmware and get it working on other adapters. There may also be cheaper adapters out there that use the same radio/chipset in their generic adapters. Finding the correct person to handle the task is just a matter of going to the correct forums.

Could be interesting.
By the way, wasn't there a way to use a modded PSP as a wlan stick you didn't have to install?
My PSP days are long over so I don't really know.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

I understand doing stuff just to see if it can be done.. But going through all the trouble to potentially screw up both adapters you're working with isn't worth the risk.

You can brick a router easily by installing wrong FW. Trying to reverse engineer FW on a $100 wireless adapter(overpriced POS) and making it work for a maybe $40 wireless adapter.. I see no point. You can buy the original xbox wireless adapter or any of the goofy wireless bridge game link things for the same $40 bucks and it's just plug and play.

I'd rather waste my time on bigger fish I suppose but have fun :)

True in a way its not really something that is in high demand, but it has its benefits.Take for instance two people buying the official wireless adapter making it a $200 dollar investment. It clearly shows you how much money people can save by doing hacks like this even if its not really in high demand. For $100 dollars you could buy two wireless adapters and still have money left over to spend.I know how much wireless adapters cost, and the official wireless adapter is nothing special. As you mentioned its a POS that isn't worth the money to begin with. The advantage would benefit everyone that wanted to use a wireless adapter at a cheaper price, and probably better quality as well. The risks involved dealing with firmware could lead to screwing up something in the process, and I don't recommend it to someone who is just starting out either.I think we all know the consequences that could come from messing with firmware.

I don't mind any hack that could benefit everyone, but at the moment its pretty much a thought at best. The right people would have to be involved and two offical wireless adapters would be needed as well.It wouldn't be cheap at all to actually do this type of mod,but its not a bad idea either.

Not going to argue your logic, but they still would have to buy a wireless adapter thats compatable with the fw hack (if there was one)
I don't usually see any USB ones under 40 bucks much. Well I suppose ebay.

You guys are both correct. The simple fact of the matter is this. Microsoft makes us shell out all this cash just so we can go wireless when you can pick up a generic usb adapter off ebay any day for under $20, some under $10! Seriously! Wireless internet for under $10 bucks (possibly) and it being the matter of a simple flash then plug n play. Technology only advances and prices usually drop. I'm not disgruntled, but M$ has killed us with their proprietary hardware. I can understand why nobody would want to tackle this and spend $100 bucks on a wireless adapter just to rip firmware from it, but you can pick up a used one for about $70 bucks. There is someone on a forum somewhere that could probably handle this as a fun project. I mean someone found a way to flash the dvd drives and multiple other forms of hardware. Why not this? The sad part is that I see this thread potentially dying off without anyone who could possibly help taking any interest. :(

Surely it's easier (and cheaper) to just buy a cheap used router off fleabay and use it as a gaming adapter ?. Gaming adapters are basically just an overpriced way of selling routers/adapters with crippled functionality for those who are daft enough and value their hard-earned money so little that they're prepared to fall for it :)
