I have three xbox 360 controllers.
One made in 2006 and the other two were made in 2008.
The 2006 controller lets me charge the battery with the play and charge kit off any USB socket on any computer or a USB power adapter.

The 2008 controllers will only let me charge the same battery or any battery off the 360 usb or my wii usb sockets. It wont charge from computer or any other usb device.

What did they change in the controllers since 2006?

I love charging off my USB power socket adapter. Is there a hack for the newer controllers to charge off anything? I'm flogging my wii as I am only using it as an expensive charger for 360 controllers. I am also flogging this older controller so I need to be able to charge the 2008 controller off comp usb or whatever. Don't like leaving the 360 on to charge even though it isn't using the gpu. I can't sleep with the fans buzzing all night.

Thanks.

I didn't know there was a difference between controllers.
I personally swear by standard rechargeable batteries (2500mAh) in my (standard wireless) controllers. They last for weeks, maybe a month on one charge.

Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W
Network ~ DD-WRT ~ 2node WDS-WPA2/AES ~ Buffalo WHR-G54S. 3node WPA2/AES ~ WRT54GS v6 (inc. WEP BSSID), WRT54G v2, WRT54G2 v1. *** Forum Rules ***

you could get a charger just for the 360 batteries, i got one that holds too batteries and plugs into any household power outlet. charges in like an hour super fast. would cost $20-30 tho.

as far as hacks to make it charge i have never heard of any, but i hadnt heard the new controllers wouldnt charge off pc usb either. Maybe it is the new battery and not the controller? thats a wild guess but i would take the old battery put it in a new model remote and see. also try the samething with an old charge cable with a new remote. but you are probably right in it being the remote not the battery or cable. i would try everything before spending money tho.

I can confirm that new rechargeable batteries from 2008 or older rechargeable batteries from 2006 wont charge in newer controllers off computer usb. Only xbox and the wii for some reason. The older controllers will charge new or old batteries off any powered usb port on pc or anything. Why they now want you to only charge it off 360 power is bizarre to me.

Guess I'll buy there stand alone charger then. IS there any cheaper third party chargers?

Thanks for the help.

I can't comment on the play and charge kits, i bought wireless controllers in order to not have to buy a kit to then use wires :)

I swear by this charger myself, and have bought the same one for other people who swear by it too, it even has a car adapter ~

I have rechargeable batteries in every single remote control i own (many) and any other device that needs them (i won't waste money on non-rechargeable batteries),

Thanks for the info, had never heard of such clever things. I'd be sitting here complaining that i'd not heard of those sooner, apart from the fact that luckily all my rechargeables are convenient due to the way that i use them, and as i keep just enough spares for use purely while the originals are charged.

i think it has to do with the voltage. its either that or amperage.

Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz 1.4V//Maximus Formula (RF 0902)//2x2GB DDR2 800//8500GT (backup until 5870 comes out)//Corsair 650TX//Under water (30c Idle 50c Load)

No. This is not a bug. The two newest controllers will not charge from computer usb with old or new cables or old or new batteries. Thanks for the suggestions about rechargeable batteries. The nyko 360 charger kit comes with two xbox 360 rechargeable batteries and the charger has two slots for two xbox batteries. Looks good.

I have no idea why it would charge from the wii and not the computer but they could have updated it so it takes some sort of software to swtich the charging light to the ready light (the wii could have a similar interface that bypass' ms security feature). I remember plugging in my controller to charge one of the packs and it never turned to the ready light. It probably dramatically decreased the life of the battery (because it got so hot while charging) the night i left it plugged in. I recently bought a brand new battery pack and you can tell how much longer it lasts than the one i killed. Though it really shouldn't be damaged being a nickel metal hydride battery pack.

As for using the batteries it seems like a good idea, just remember to pick a good battery and nothing super powerful. Don't pick a nickel cadium battery because they are way outdated. At my work we use mainly energizer NiMH 2500mAh batteries with the backup batteries being a generic 2800mAh NiMH battery. Always use a smart charger that turns off after the charging cycle.

Also be aware that you can burn things out by using a stronger battery. I've burned out many small motors designed to run on alkaline batteries. I don't think you'd damage the xbox controller by using stronger batteries but it's something to consider.

I have both a redesigned and an original controller so maybe i'll do some tests and see what is goin on while it's plugged in. I'll let you guys know if/when i get around to it.

Is it possible that the xbox360 USB has the ability to switch polarity?????? And of course your pc cannot switch polarity. The reason I ask is one of the controllers switches the triggers and buttons to ground with B+ as common and the other controller switches the triggers and buttons to B+ with ground being common. Not sure which is which, new or old??? Just something to think about.

edit,

On second thought, I think what I just wrote is crap. The diffence in new and old controllers having different "commons" at the buttons and triggers is fact but I don't the xbox usb ports can identify polarity and adapt. Maybe I will intentionally hook up a usb device to my xbox backwards and monitor the 5v output.....
