Hey I flashed my first drive today using all the knowledge I had read and it all went fine to 1.51 with the required sata card, jungle flasher and the connectivity kit 3 pro.
That said I then started on my friends 360. Now his has an hitachi 47 in it but he tells me that it is not the drive that originated in it. He was getting dirty disk errors and he took it to a bloke who told him he put a new drive in it.
I tried to flash using my sata card, ck3 and jungle flasher and everything was going great until I pressed read to source and then I get this error
"Dumping f/w of Hitachi Pre 78 by Classic Ram Peek Method over Port IO
.........Classic Dump Failed"
So my question is am I doing something wrong or is it in deed the fact that he has a spoofed drive in it. I read a bit about this and it looks like I would have to reset the drive flash it and then spoof it again. How would I do that or is it not needed? Thanks for any help I can get on this as it was a big step even having the balls to do mine I really don't want to mess my friends up.
Also I was not able to eject the drive from my computer, is that right?

I had similar issues when flashing my drive.
You will firstly need to reset firmware to stock which can be done by jungle flasher and then upgrade to iExtreme.
Make sure you have the correct FW for the Hitachi in the firmware folder. I had to switch between WinAPI & PortIO. I also couldnt eject it in windows or Jungle Flasher until I manually ejected and closed the drive then it work fine on both.
Detail of how to reset to stock firmware is included with the guide.

The drive is not flashed and comes up in jungle flasher as "stock" How do I find out what the original drive in it was or does it even matter? If I return it to stock then flash it won't I need to spoof it again? That is what I am trying to find out.

You shouldnt need to do this as they key has already been extracted in its in the current drive firmware.
You dont need to find out what the old drive was AFAIK

what do I need to do then? Sorry I am just at a loss, these are supposed to be the easiest drives to flash and it isn't too easy for me :s what would you advise using? People say to use that firmware toolbox but I don't know if there is a way of putting 1.51 on with that?

As I mentioned in my previous reply, firstly try switching between PortIO and WinAPI. If your still having probs, try open and close your drive manually with the button (not sure if you can do this with the connectivity kit but if not, just use your SATA card and xbox power for the drive)
Hope this helps.

I have just installed the drivers that came with my sata card and it now comes up as a via raid controller - 3249 Now that I have the proper drivers installed do you think it will pick up the drive properly? Are you sure I can just flash it as a 47 and the fact that there was once a different drive it won't brick it?

ok this is where I am at. I got the drive into mode B and recognised by my pc with jungle flasher but from there all I can do is dumb things from it not write to it as it always fails. So I used the old flash ix with the 1.4 firmware just to see if I could get anything on it and it all went through. The drive now shows up as flashed but it will not read any of my copys but still plays retail games. So that aside I decided to try return it to stock in jungle flasher and then re-flash in jungle and I get this when trying to return to stock. If someone could please help it would me much appreciated.

Have you tried the PortIO option instead of WinAPI?
Did you connect with the 360 power supply and eject the drive?
I had a very similar problem with my hitatchi 46 and this is how I resolved it?

I have just tried again with mode select and have managed to flash it back to stock and flash 1.51 successfully to the drive. 360 boots fine and plays retail but still will not play copies. Is this an issue with the drive, might it need a new laser or something?

man this is annoying lol. I have a multi meter but I don't know how to use it lol. I keep getting a resistance of like 8 and it says it should be at 3/4 I'm gonna keep turning it slowly and see what happens. :s

A multi meter is the best thing to use, I however did mine without one. All I did was turn the screw a tiny fraction at a time until it worked.

Thank you for all your help mate it is now playing the back ups! I am still gonna tinker with this pot a bit as I think I can get it to run a lil smoother but least I know a place where it definitely works.
I love it when things that don't work finally do! lol

Great, glad your sorted. Just remember, don't tweak it below 28000 as it will seriously reduce the life expectancy of your drive.

I struggled with an Hitachi drive all I did was click use win api and for the transfer method I used mode select instead of port I0 as the tutorial sugests. I too used a VIA card at the time I flashed it I had with latest drivers installed so it shows up in your device manager as a 3249 not VT6421A. (I had trouble when it was VT6421A but I can't say for def this was the reason) Since then I have left as 3249 and only install the drivers for lite-ons. Had no issues flashing any drive.
