I've acquired a new 46in 1080p and want to take full advantage of it. I currently have a philips dvp5990 and it has done me well playing all my divx/xvid avi files I have connect to my external hard drive. But it is incapable of playing those new HD h264 files i have come by and want to play with this new tv.
In short im trying to find a unit that is capable of playing these files and supports an external drive with divx/xvid avi files. its currently fat32 and understand it has to be formatted with macdrive to support these new x264 greater than 4gb.
Ive done about 2hrs searching browsing the internet on the best solution to play these, on a stand alone player is the Western digital WD TV and runs around a 130 dollars, its will do eveything i currently want but would gladly spend the extra money on a xbox360 or the ps3 if they are capable of this also.
The xbox 360 who supports the files but not sure if is capable of playing xvid files or can connect to an external hard drive, and wondering how good the upconversion of it is, or how useful is in general.
The ps3 has the blueray drive, but i doubt i would be using it since my main focus is playing them from on external hard drive, but would love to be able to play these new games on this tv, considering I havent purchased either of these next gen consoles yet.
I also get the concept of an HTTPC and do own and aren't currently using a powermac g5, but it only has dvi out and would want to take full advantage of the 1080p and arent to sure if dvi is capable of this, i know it only is video output, and the g5 does have optical audio out also.
Its long and i appreciate any suggestion, help or clarity any of you can provide.
