CPU VS GPU converting/encoding... Can anyone tell me which is better?

By googling this subject matter, I can only find year old
threads which isn't specific...

I know ATi and Nvidia has their own encoding via GPU:
for example, ATi's Avivo.


Some people are saying GPU encoding is waaaay faster than
CPU encoding, while others are counter-arguing that GPU
encoding is premature and that CPU encoding gives you
better quality, etc etc etc....


Can anyone clarify the pros and cons?

Additionally, does anyone know if Avivo allows you to rip
/encode/convert videos from DVDs(.vob) to .avi like AutoGk or DVDx?
