Hi guys,

First post here... I have an xbox360 and im trying to flash the dvd drive with the latest firmware! I have the xbox linked to my onboard sata port on K8V-MX mobo which has VIA chipset i believe. and the power supply is picked up from the xbox itself!

Now I have managed to get the drive into modeb fine using jungleflash selecting the port and pressing mode b button. After restart the bios picks it up fine and the pc startes no problem, windows picks it up after a couple of presses of the eject button upon load up and it shows in my computer and device manager...

Now i go to firmware toolbox to dump the firmware that is on the drive at the moment to extract the key. When i open it up and press tools etc, it sees the drive fine if i press dump it tells me to insert a dvd/cd etc so i do and press the cd close button 3 times or the close button in the program i have tried both methods. The cd spins and as soon as i press the dump button it tells me it "cannot read from source" and the disc stops spinning! I have tried many different methods and timings to no avail. Im pretty sure once i manage to dump whats on there ill be fine to put new firmware on but its doing the dump.

Also i have noticed people say it should play music or dvd's or see xbox games as video files but when i put a disc in it sees nothing at all???? plays nothing at all???? If i go into my computer it just says please insert disc. If i remove it all from the pc the game/disc spins and the draw opens as normal etc

I have seen others who have managed to using my mobo so its not that that is the problem i dont think and the drive worked fine in the xbox when removed yesterday.

Can anyone suggest to me what i am doing wrong/missing/not doing etc ? i dont particularly want to put it back together till its been flashed so ill leave it as is for now....

Thanks guys!

I worked off textbook's tutorial to the mark... For some reason i cant get the pc to boot off the slax disc i have tried various different copies with no luck....

If i open jungle flasher then click on the hitachi tab then choose the right port and press send mode b it puts the xbox in modeb so i reboot the pc with it in mode b and keep opening the drawer... Once it has started the drive is in my computer and in device manager however if you put a disc in the drive the drive just spins... It doesnt pop up saying about how to use the disc or anything. In my computer it just says please insert disc. If i use toolbox now with the drive in modeb when i press "dump raw" with a disc in it says i need to put in a disc but there is one in there allready. I have tried DVD's CD's and original games and still nothin?!?!

besides i thought podgers tut was for the 79fk not the 78fk

Podgers says 78 on the top...Getting into B mode is the same execpt you dont need 79unlock.....I have a 79 and I couldnt figure out Jungle Flasher so I used Firmware toolbox.....I reflashed my drive back to original.bin (Dont know if you have to I just did) the copy your keys.....select the 1.51 firmware for your drive. ( I used ix151-79-4e10 its the 79 12x) You would use ix151-78-4e10 ..Then replace the key with yours that you copied. Then go to Tools...Then Direct Drive Flash...Differential Flash (Patch) Then read and detect differences...May ask if you want to keep key on drive click yes...Then Flash it.....Thats what I done...Hope I helped you some...

Also when using Slax 2.1 About half way though it says loading disc ejct the dvd drive on xbox ...then wait for it to finish reboot pc and do the rest...Just use Firmware Toolbox with what I told ya and it will work

make sure of this before continuing!!!!!!Even if it worked yesterday, put it back in and see if it reads originals now, you might have f'd up the laser or unplugged a ribbon while messing with the drive.

Ill go try it now!

Yes it does play games fine! and dvd's and music cd's...

That card would cost me more to get posted to here(stoke on trent, uk) than it would cost me to get someone else to do it. I have plenty of friends that flash them for a charge.

Ive got SATA ive got VIA chipset ive got the cables required.... I SHOULD be able to do it in theory! I can only assume i must be doing something wrong. Slax wont work for some odd reason? it boots to the screen where it says the name of the program and then shows a "loading" sign and stops there! ive tried different versions of toolbox jungle flasher and slax, still no avail.

Ive heard ppl have more success with win API sometimes? how do i use this method?

Thanks

No you dont have to remove any drive...Id say its your sata port ...Order the type I showed you...Look on your ebay...the uk one......It wont cost must to ship im in the US so that why I showed you that one...Im sure theres plenty on them in your country and it would be cheap to get....Sometime onboard sata ports wont work....

Yeah SATA RAID is off... Surely though if it was the SATA port the pc wouldnt pick up the drive at all? Also i thought that the VIA chipsets worked better? I have VIA VT8237R on my mobo.... I dont suppose you know if it is compatible?

Ok so it turns out that my chipset is definately compatible so that cant be the problem!

The reason i didnt see the WIN API button was because i was on an old version of the program. I now have 0.1.5.1b and it has the correct buttons however i get exactly the same result.

I have re-installed windows from a blank drive that has been fully formatted.
I then update all my drivers. i then re-download all the needed programs. At this point do i need to remove my VIA driver in order to install the PORT IO? or do i just go ahead and install it anyway?
I installed it manually not via the .exe using controll panel add new hardware etc (with my VIA driver installed).
Open jungle flasher. It detects nothing.
Turn off the pc and back on again with the drive attached and powered on.
The pc picks up the drive and windows boots up fine!
I open up jungle flasher again.
Click hitachi tab
press PORT I/O
on the left hand side i scroll down through the drop downs untill my hitachi shows up as the picture in the jungle flasher pdf.
then i press send mode b
then i power off as it says
then i press ok and turn the xbox back on
BAM windows picks it up first time i get the mode b set message. windows does its little thing down in the corner.
If i try and dump now it says no chance, if i try and win API dump now it says no chance.
I restart pc
drive shows up fine windows starts up fine and drive is now in my computer and device manager
i start up jungle flasher and it reads the drive and sees its there!
I press dump via the port IO mode i get the error message failed to dump firmware
I try the WinAPI i get very similar message.
And cannot go any further. This is where i am stuck.
As far as all the guides ive seen go everything is going fine and works exactly as the guide untill this point where i cant go any further.

I have tried toolbox 4.8 it says it cant read from source. doesnt matter when i push the botton or what i put in the drive i get same error.
I have tried all different sorts of discs in the drive and it spins but never seems to actually do anything. If put back in the xbox it all runs great!

I have ONCE managed to get it too see the files on the disc by pressing explore in my comp just as i push the drive in but ive not managed to get it too do it again since!

I have an AMD semperon xp3000+ running at 2.17 gig with 1 gig of RAM PC3200 DDR400
Asus K8V-MX mobo with onboard VIA VT8237R chipset
nvidia fx5200 graphics card
windows XP media centre fresh install 2005 sp2
Net framework 2.0
DL dvd drive allthough the drive doesnt seem to have a name on it it shows as it is DL with drive inspector.

Slax Cd will not work ive tried about 11 different copies and non seem to boot from the disc propperly. i always get an error while its loading!

Any think of anything to try before i goand waste some money on a sata board to do this one chore?

Ok i don't think i can help you with the way you are doing it but i can tell you the way i did it

Delete portio32 you don't need it you only need your via drivers installed

first of all you would have to find a working copy of slax to burn to cd it is only 57.6 mb so shouldn't be hard or take long and make sure your pc is set to boot from dvd drive

get everything ready im assuming that you have jungle flasher 0.1.51 and the jungle flasher firmware pack.

Copy over the contents of the jungle flasher firmware pack into the firmware folder

ok turn off pc hook up xbox to sata on pc, turn on pc and when you see slax begin to load turn on xbox, you should then see the spinning up disc. when you see that open xbox tray and its in mode b. Press the close button on the xbox once then manually push it in to close reboot the computer . Don't turn off the xbox. on windows loading screen eject the xbox drive by pressing the eject button twice, when windows has loaded you can close it again by pressing it once and pushing it in to close

Make sure it shows up in my computer and then start Jungle flasher

Select use Win API

on drive drop down list make sure its selected on the Xbox Hitachi Drive

Vendor information all being empty doesn't matter

Drive revision - 78/79

and transfer method - ram upload

Flashing Options - Dump Drive

and then press READ To Source

Once completed it will ask you to save - save as Orig.bin or whatever you like

Then Select Flash Ixtreme and press the flash hacked fw button

It will then dump the drive and ask you to save - save as hacked.fw or whatever you want

it will then do a test and hopefully report as stable and ask you if you want to continue click yes only if it was stable

And thats it.

well it turns out i needed to get windows to see the drive by puttin it into mode b. then restart pc with it in mode b and the open jungle flasher and press the send mode b button AGAIN.... without this step it has been impossible with it it took less than 30 seconds!
