put it in the psp and check if it says magicgate unknown or is blank.

Go to video on your psp
click on information
if it does not say magicgate - supported
then its fake.

Ok so I did that and it says magicgate- unknown so I prolly got screwed huh? What does this mean for me? is it un useable also does sony make a legitamate 8gb memory stick?

you can still use the fake but you cant save games and you can only get maybe 3 or4 games onto it. make sure you format it in the psp before using. save will say data corpt.
best bet is to buy from a shop you trust, gamestop sell them. 4gb is 40euro. hope this helps

as you already discovered the only real way to tell if its a fake memory stick is when things just don't add up, like when adding several homebrew in different orders and one works one time but shows up as corrupted the next. also the fact you was not able to delete some or all data was the main clue to it being a fake the fact its sony and had magicgate on the stick but the psp says unknown or not supported is not always proof that its a fake as i have several 4 and 8gb sticks that would appear to be fake but i've never had any trouble with them even when filling them.
