Probably you don't need to convert them, just need to install the proper codecs. Try installing FFDShow.

Vista doesn't play avi files automaticly like XP. You can either download vlc player or divX, which allows you to play avi in wmp.

I haven't played with Vista, but it sounds like some crappy OS.

So you are saying Vista doesn't play Audio Video Interleave, known as AVI, MS' own multimedia container format introduced in 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology?

If it was me, I'd install K-Lite codec pack. That'll fix it.

Vista has a specific codec package to play avi files, especially xvid and mpeg4 files.

I found this out myself when I got a new lappy and had to use vista. I had quite a few avi files that wouldn't play. They played when I downloaded vlc, but I went ahead and downloaded dvix codec, and that seems to work. Besides that, I also changed all the files to mpeg2, so that also works.

Yes, Miss Varnull, I know better than to use wmp, but I still do. It seemed it did not like when I clicked for it to NOT check online for info on the files (music/music videos) I want to play. I'm still not a full vista convert....don't think I ever will be. Just had to get a new lappy....and all I could find was vista.
Edit: damn spelling

I am extremely new to downloading video. I downloaded one from a torrent and it will play but skips terribly. It's like watching a highlight reel. I've tried it in realplayer and windows media player for vista. It is a mpeg file.
