It seems after playing them for a while (couple of months or more), my backups get scratched easily even if I take extra care of them. Not only that but they get screwed up to the point where they won't load at all.. which leads me to my second concern.

1. My dvd backups get these weird scuff or blotch scratch marks around the outer end of the disc (I don't really know what to call them) and 2. they get these 'dot' marks or something like that which is even more damaging to the disc. It looks like someone took the disc and got a thin needle/pin and applied moderate pressure to it on purpose on it or something.

Just a couple of 'dot' marks and my disc is completely unusable and I have to waste another disc to re-burn the game.

Another thought: Swap Magic discs must be cheaply made because they, too, get scratched to hell when I take care of them. FWIW, my originals are in near mint condition so it shows that I treat my games well.

I forgot to mention...

drive: NEC ND3520W
media: Verbatim DatalifePlus DVD-Rs (Mitsubishi Chem Corp.)

Though recently I thought i'd try something so I am using the same thing except they are DVD+Rs this time.

I heard good things about both the media and my drive. For some reason I'm thinking my problem is caused by my cheap burner? I paid $69 for it about 3 years ago.. I dunno why but I just get the feeling it's my burner, even though it has performed well to this day, (burned ~500 dvds and ~500 cds)

Here is a good faq on buying media
http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm

If you don't like reading, there is a table showing which discs are best.

I don't know much about your burner, You could google it too see reviews by others.

I myself used to use Yamaha, and now only buy LG burners. I have for years. Just what I stick with.

My backups have lasted years already, and I only use 1st class media.

Yes I remember my Swap Magic DVD looking scratched as hell, yet it still loaded 100% every time.

If your going to use DVD+R, make sure to set your BOOKTYPE to DVD-ROM in your burning program.

I've seen and read that FAQ countless times. My media are 1st class. Isn't that FAQ only useful to see the success of burn rates and nothing else? (longevity etc.)

And like I said, my burner is a known good one. It had the best reviews among them all at newegg.com when I bought it.

So am I the ONLY one here that is experiences these 'blotch' and 'dot' markings on my backups?

If my DVD media is top class, and drive is top rated, then what else could be the cause of my problem?

That faq is also for the longetivity. The better discs have a better dye.
They need to be stored in a cool dry place.

It could very well be your burner. It is already old compared to the new products today.

You can always try a new burner, its really up to you.

Are you using 16x or 8x discs?

The ones I had always been buying (about 6-8 50 packs now) were 8x DVD-R being burned at 4x. My newest batch is 16x DVD+R. I've only used 1 so far but I will still continue to burn at 4x.

Could it really be my burner? If so, Do I have to shell out $75 or more bucks to get a 'decent' one to get passed this problem?

Do you know if any else had the same problem as me here?

I can't say I know of anyone else with this problem.
So with the 16x discs are you having the same issue?

I can't find a NEC ND-3520w but found ND-3520a

Did you update your firmware when you purchased it?

First of all, I will say that I actually had made this same thread, 2 years ago, but I completely forgot about it. You can read that thread here:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/413819

Anyways... sorry that should have read 'ND-3520AW', not 'ND-3520W'. When I first had purchased it, it was read as 'ND-3520A'. Then after updating it was read as 'ND-3520AW'.

I think i've only ever updated it's firmware once or twice when someone recommended that I should do so, when I was first having problems. Current firmware version of my drive is 3.07 and I believe that is probably the latest version.

I can't say whether or not i'm having the same issue with these 16x ones, since i've only burned a couple of them so far, and haven't 'worn' them enough yet. Though, what I find odd is when my backupped DVD get 'screwed up', I can simply take that same disc and successfully make another image out of it, then re-burn it and I can get passed that loading screen/black screen or whatever. Is the PC much better at reading a damaged disc than the PS2 or something?

Anyways, please look through my post in that that thread I linked to, if you have some time, in case there might be something I left out.

Thanks.

Yes the PC is usually able to read discs that the PS2 can't, unless they are really damaged.

The PS2 may not read it if it can't find the BOOT code in the beginning of the disc.

Well I read through most of that thread, and its either you had a bad bunch of discs or its a burner issue.

Are these blotches there after burning the disc, or later on after playing in the PS2.

I wouldn't say its your PS2 if all your Original disks are fine and not scratched or anything.

See how the 16x disks work out for you. I think they will be better myself.

If they give you the same problem, then I would really think about buying a newer burner.

Do your burn your backups with imgburn?

Just recently with this new batch I've started using ImgBurn, as I had never knew the program existed 3-4 years ago. I used to use DVD Decrypter for a short while when I first got into soft-modding, but then switched to using Alcohol 120% for like.. forever.

You know, I don't even know if 'blotches' is the correct term. I tried to google for it but I can't find anything at all. Wish I had a camera to take a picture of it. But yeah. It happens sometimes later after playing the game dvd so much. Come to think of it, when I use the DVDs for other stuff such as backing up data, or even movie backups, I can't seem to recall the so called 'blotches' appearing on them. But i'll take a look at my old backups to see.

My original PS2 DVD games look fine. They may have some swirl marks and minor scratch here and there, but it's not even comparable to the damage of the DVD-R games. So yeah it definitely isn't my PS2, also, due to the fact that this is a new, different one.

I refuse to believe it's my dvd burner that is the problem. But I might invest in a new one anyway just in an attempt to solve the mystery. My only other thought is maybe this is a common problem but people just aren't understanding, or i'm just misinterpreting it. I dunno.

Here's what I use:

DVD R/W Drive: LG SecurDisc
DVD Media: MOSER BAER DVD-R (16X)

That's it...all are working perfectly fine with no scratches whatsoever...

Here's a tip: Please keep it single handed and avoid passing onto others...which increases the chances of scratches and degradation of the media.
