Had a bunch of these AVI files that had been encoded with Xvid, though I didn't know that until I checked them after a burn project using GSpot. Turns out some of the them didn't have the codec so need to have Xvid added so DivX will play them back on WMP.

So how do I encode it with Xvid?

You can download the xvid codec from here: http://www.xvid.org/

This is weird! I guess I should have tested out all of the AVI files before I posted, but anyway, here's the deal...Out of the 22 avi files, only three will not play in WMP 11. Before I installed Xvid just about half would not play. Of the three that will not play now, one does have the Xvid codec in it, according to GSpot, but the other two do not.

Also, when I get that error message in WMP it says C00D1199: Cannot Play The File. This is for a friend of mine who is not real particular about software so I could tell him to just install VLC I guess, but I\d still like to know what's going on with those three files.

Since you have the codecs installed, there must be something wrong with the Videos. Most likely they are downloads, which means very probable to be corrupted.

VLC can play better broken/corrupted/incomplete downloaded AVIs. You can try that.

Also,to try to fix it, you can run the problematic files through Avifixed , DivFix++ or re-pack it with Avidemux or Avimux_Gui and maybe re-build the index.

This just keeps getting weirder and weirder! Your probably right about it being a problematic file from a crummy download or something. Just trying to do the best I can with it for now though.

Of your recommendations I'm only familiar with AVIDemux, but I started with AVIFixed. I opened up the program and navigated to my videos folder. One of the files that would not play in WMP did not even show up in the window along with one file that did play in WMP, but the other two that also would not play in WMP did show up!

So I opened up AVIDemux and loaded one of the files that wouldn't play in WMP and did not show up in the AVIFixed window. I was immediately asked if I wanted to index it. I saw no other other choice, so I said yes. It did it's thing but then an error message popped up that said "Can't determine aspect ratio", so I clicked "OK" on that and the video did display.

Now I'm not sure how to proceed next. You mentioned something about repacking it but I'm not sure how to do that. I'm still just only going to concentrate on the three files that would not play in WMP.

I'm not going to worry about the new one that wouldn't show up in AVIFixed, because it at least it will play in WMP and that's all my friend needs. Still weird though that it was the only file that played in WMP that would not show up in the AVIfixed window!

now that you got the video to show up in avidemux, on the left is a section that says video (default is copy) change that to mpeg4 asp which is xvid codec. Next press filter button go to the resize filter (resize your video to a compliant video size 640x480 or something similar), go to the crop filter, if you have any blackbars crop them out. Your done with the video section
now go to the audio section, instead of copy choose the lame mp3 codec.

Below audio is the format box, if it says unpack streams, change it to avi.

Next save your video, make sure when you name it you add the .avi suffix to it, avidemux doesn't do automatically.

An update...Just to let everyone who has helped me here know what's going on. I haven't messed with AVIDemux yet. In the meantime I tried playing some of the files in VLC. It repaired two of them and would not even play another one at all!

That probably speaks volumes for your point cypresrom that some of these files are probably corrupted. No to worry though, whatever I can't repair, I can't repair, but I am going to also try DivX Repair 1.01 and I found Digital Video Repair in Google. We'll see what that does.
