Hello AfterDawn community,
I just recently registered here, although I have viewed threads on this forum in the past. This seems like a knowledgeable forum, and I would use the search feature if I thought it was going to be very useful, but I thought I should ask the members the questions before searching for answers.
I purchased a Xbox 360 60GB a few days ago and I want to flash/modify it. However, I do have some concerns: mainly having to do with Xbox Live and getting banned. I would appreciate it if you could spend some time and help me by answering the questions.
1) How many ways are there to flash the Xbox 360 and which do you recommend? Do you recommend soft modding the Xbox 360? I want to be able to play CDs, DVDs, Xbox retail and burned games, and Xbox 360 retail and burned games. Is this possible? (I do not have a Xbox, so that is why I want to play Xbox games on the Xbox 360.)
2) What are the best methods of securing my console from getting banned from Xbox Live? And how do I know when Microsoft searches for modified/flashed Xbox 360s?
3) I do not know how Microsoft bans users from accessing Xbox Live. I just know that if you are banned, and if you have a modded Xbox 360, then you have to buy a new Xbox 360. Does anyone know how Microsoft prevents access to Xbox Live from a modified/flashed Xbox 360? Isn?t there a way to prevent them from doing whatever it is that they do to ban you ? like cloak it (the something)?
4) Is the risk of getting banned the same when using retail and burned Xbox 360 games? Does anyone know the probability of getting banned?
5) Does anyone know where to get the Xbox 360 headsets for cheap? I know about eBay, so please mention someplace else.
Thank you,
DJ

1. depends on which drive you have, but there are at least two ways to flash every drive.
2. dont flash it
3. they block your console from getting on live. no way of 'hiding' it. only way to 'unban' yourself is through a long difficult procedure that will leave a different console being banned, and you have to have access to the second console to get information from it.
4. yes, and 100% chance of getting banned. eventually your time will come and you will be banned, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
5. gamestop or some other place that sells used stuff??

Thanks for your response, Wabashman. I still would like to know:
(1) Are there ways to check for the Microsoft scans/searches for flashed Xbox 360s?
(2) Can you please explain or link me to a detailed page that shows how Microsoft blocks the console from accessing Xbox Live.
(3) Have you been banned yet?
(4) Can you play CDs, DVDs, Xbox retail and burned games, and Xbox 360 retail and burned games on a flashed Xbox 360?

Microsoft sends challenges to your 360 drive and then your drive sends responses. If those those responses are not what Microsoft was expecting, that will throw a couple of red flags at MS and eventually could lead to your getting banned. There is no sense in trying to look deeper into the matter. You are ALWAYS running a risk playing back-ups online. But here is somethings to do that will give yourself the best CHANCE at not getting banned...
1. Run the most up-to-date firmware.
2. Make sure you ISO completely passes the ABGX check.
3. Don't play games online before release date.
It is a matter of risk vs. reward. For some of us, that is an easy decision. Flashing the console will pay for itself quickly. If you do in fact get banned, you can buy a 360 console for 200$(US) now.

Ok I have read and know that nobody really knows what Microsoft's tactics are in banning.
Honestly I don't care about playing backups online, if I like the game enough to spend hours playing online I'll buy the thing. In this regard I liked how my old xbox was setup with the hard mod chip because I could just flip the switch to off and not have to worry at all playing on live with a legit game I had.
Now, however the firmware mod is on there all the time, I cant just turn it off, so even if I am playing an original online I still could get banned.
I feel that I am less likely to get banned if I don't play backups online but I don't know this for sure. Based on the research I have done it seems that the backups trigger more bans than the firmware hack does.
Any opinions on that?
Thanks

You cannot get banned if you do not play backups online and do not have the internet connected to the Xbox 360. If you want to play games, but still want access to your Xbox Live account, I suggest that you remove the ethernet cable or wireless adapter when playing those games.

yea and then as soon as you sign back into live via a real game connected to the internet, it sends all the information since your last login. so you are really accomplishing nothing.

What games you played, acheivements unlocked, etc. Then it would go back and start the whole challenge and response stuff again. So unplugging the cable does absolutely nothing for you.

Not 100% as no one truely knows how ms gets their data, but they do know it sends all the information as of what games played and the like. So to believe that unplugging your Ethernet cable will save you from being banned is just absurd.

As you said, nobody know 100% how MS gets their data, and probably nobody ever will. In theory, it should not send the disk running info... but i'm just guessing.
I heard about this tut to unban, seems like a load of shit, but who knows, exen is a respected mod company:

I know it sounds simple but i was thinking about just setting up an extra user account for playing backed up games, this one would be a live account so all achievements and game history and stuff would be kept separate and you could use your live account for playing real games. Opinions on this?

might work, but theres no way to show off your gammer score then, lol. but then again it really doesnt do anything for you in real life. not saying you do this, but since most people with a flashed console either download games, or rent and then rip them, just take the 200 bucks you saved by getting 4 games and put it towards a new console if yours should get banned.

sorry i meant an account that was not set up for live lol and yer i think most people probably have that in mind so i guess its only fair but u know finding a way round it is always beneficial, the amount we get ripped off is stupid, i mean that wireless adapter is a rip off as are new controllers and other accessories so u know, take what u can, give nothing back ha ha

there are alternatives for the wireless receiver, and there are plenty of places to get wireless controllers for dirt cheap.
